About W-2 Easy Guide
A free, no-account tool that takes the numbers off your W-2 and tells you — quickly and honestly — whether you're getting a refund or you'll owe.
Why this exists
A W-2 lands in someone's mailbox in late January and the obvious question is: am I getting a refund, or do I owe? Most existing tools either require an account, walk you through 30 questions, or hide the answer until you pay. This site answers that question in under 2 minutes — and tells you what to do about it next year.
Part of the Easy Guide family
W-2 Easy Guide is a sister site to W-4 Easy Guide. The W-4 tells you what to write so the right amount gets withheld. The W-2 (which we predict against here) tells you whether what got written actually worked. If our predictor says you over-withheld or under-withheld, you'll find a clear cross-link on the result page to the W-4 tool to fix it for next year.
How to read the result
The predictor returns one of three answers:
- Refund — you over-withheld, the IRS owes you the difference.
- Even (within ~$200) — your withholding is well-tuned. Nothing to fix.
- Owe — you under-withheld and will write a check at tax time.
The estimate is accurate to within about $100 for the cases the tool covers. It's an estimate, not a tax return.
What it doesn't do
It's not TurboTax. It doesn't file your taxes, handle itemized deductions, handle multi-state income, or replace a tax professional. If your situation is more complex than the tool handles, we'll send you to the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator with a clear explanation of why.
Who built it
W-2 Easy Guide is built by Graham at the Easy Guide portfolio. The tax math uses official 2026 IRS numbers and is checked against a set of test cases worked out by hand.
